St Magnus Centre, Orkney

The medieval St. Magnus Cathedral is owned by the people of Orkney and services are open to all. As an island community they have a strong identity and interest in their own history and cultural heritage, from the ancient pre-historic to the contemporary arts.

The winner of an RIAS design competition, the St Magnus Centre created a new visitor facility for the Friends of St. Magnus, a study library and community rooms on a site overlooking the Cathedral, incorporating an extension to the existing church hall. The flexible spaces cater to a wide variety of church, community and arts events and has an impressive diary of daily and weekly events. The project benefited from Lottery funding and was commended for it’s success in catering for diverse community activities.

The project won a Civic Trust Award
