House in a Garden, Alloway

A large mature garden site wrapping around the Alloway Auld Kirk presented some extraordinary issues to resolve when ARPL designed this 6 bedroom family house. These included not only the sensitive design response required for the Burns Monument Conservation area but also access through a belt of protected trees, extensive archaeological investigations and finds, and the structural implications of a disused Victorian railway tunnel cutting diagonally across the site.

The houses in the surrounding area are a mixture of brick and rendered gabled detached houses and the scale and materials of the new house are intended to reflect the simple arts and crafts style that is prevalent. The house is sited away from the historically important ruined Church and graveyard, and the most sensitive archaeological area.
