ARPL help rescue Georgian church belfry

After two hundred years of exposure to the west coast weather,  the belfry on the Parish Church on the Isle of Colonsay had reached a perilous state. Severely eroded stonework and rusted fixings had left the belfry near collapse. At this critical point ARPL Architects were asked by the Church of Scotland to assist the parish with a scheme of repairs to save this key feature of the 1802 church.

Rebecca Cadie , an advanced conservation accredited architect, surveyed the existing structure , prepared  detailed specifications and drawings and supported the Parish through a successful fund raising campaign. The rebuilding of the Belfry,  by Rowan Stoneworks of Appin, was completed over the summer with ARPL's final inspection allowing a handover and re-dedication in September. The church is one of the key buildings on Colonsay and the restoration of its belfry has now ensured this will continue to stand firm for many years.
